On February 2, Juniata Valley High School held a blood drive organized by the Student Council. The successful event brought students, staff, and community members together to help support local blood supplies. When asked why this event was important, Student Council President Anna Taylor said, “For the Student Council, we try to reach out to not only students, but also the community. The blood drive is a way to include the community in our work to help people in need.”
The goal of the blood drive was to encourage community involvement and highlight the importance of donating blood to help those in need. Student Council members worked hard to promote the event, coordinate volunteers, and ensure the day ran smoothly. Lori Nicewonger, the Student Council advisor, stated, “Student Council gives the students the opportunity to foster skills like leadership, communication, teamwork, and organization, all of which they need for important life skills. At Juniata Valley, we try to prepare our students to not only succeed in school, but to succeed in life as well.” Student Council members’ efforts resulted in strong participation by the school and community and a positive experience for everyone involved. Community member and Head Boys’ Basketball and Track Coach, Bill Lightner, donated blood and said, “I understand that there is a shortage of blood at the time, and because I am O positive, I am the universal donor, and everyone can receive my blood.”
The work involved in organizing and running the blood drive demonstrates Student Council’s commitment to leadership, responsibility, compassion and service. Student Council member and event volunteer Lilly Sunderland stated, “ Working at the blood drive allows me to give back to the community and show leadership and responsibility.” Events like this blood drive reflect the strong sense of community at Juniata Valley High School. The Student Council would like to thank all donors, volunteers, and staff members who contributed to the success of the event. Their generosity and support helped make a difference and showed how small acts of kindness can have a big impact.
